Ergonomics Defined

Ergonomics is actually a combination of two Greek words: ergon (meaning work) and nomos (meaning rules). So the literal meaning is the rules of work. The idea is to take human anatomy and physiology into consideration when designing work tools. In this case, we are specifically focusing on your computer workstation. We are all not built alike, so how can all tools fit us the same?

Webster’s Dictionary defines ergonomics:

The applied science of equipment design in order to reduce operator fatigue and discomfort.

Another formal definition:

The field that seeks to design tools, equipment, and tasks to optimize human capabilities and accommodate human limitations.
